Recent Events at St. Martin's

This summer we had a parish picnic at the county park. It featured a pot-luck where everyone brings something and the parish provides hot dogs, hamburgers and brats. We also have sand sculpture and face painting and a small dedicated committee gets lots and lots of door prizes. Each year the picnic attracts more of our parish - and the weather always cooperates - but if it doesn't the hall we use is air conditioned and large enough to hold everyone.
Before school starts we ask for people to buy school supplies according to the school's list. People from throughout the community respond and we distribute complete backpacks and various school supplies to the schools in our area. Before school starts, the teachers have supplies for those families who have trouble buying them on their own.
As Christmas nears, our Women's Club sponsors a bake and craft sale. The parish starts to work on craft items in advance.
Our parish pantry serves the community, and we're proud that many people offer some of their time to make it a success. At Christmas time, we served over 100 families with food and the community also provided Christmas gifts for 126 kids.
Our religious education class put on a Christmas show, which ranged from a shadow play of the Nativity, to various things put on by the different classes, and ending with the most unique rendition of the 12 days of Christmas you'd ever hope to see.
Even our Christmas decorating is unique and chaotic. One group puts up the trees, another group arranges the flowers, and before you know it, the church is sparkling for Christmas.
We have a music program before our two Christmas masses. And the newest thing is trying to get our youth choir together to lead music one Sunday a month. It's just starting, but we're happy to see over 200 kids involved, and each month we get a little better.
Finally, we bought a small church. Hope Lutheran congregation was disbanding, and asked us if we would like to buy their building. They very much wanted to sell to a non-profit, and so we have a small church, with an organ we will move to St. Martin's, and we are already using it for some classrooms and are talking about various possible uses for it. We decided to call it "Hope Center"
That's what St. Martin has done in the last six months. Come and join us.
